About Ottawa

Ottawa is Canada’s capital and Ontario’s second-largest city after Toronto. Because of its international political role, Ottawa has a large population of foreign and domestic government workers who are not permanent residents of the city. This means Ottawa has a large market for variable lease lengths and long-term stay apartments (including furnished rentals) to meet the housing requirements of persons who may be in the city for several months or years at a time.

Ottawa Employment

Employment opportunities abound in Ottawa and the area’s largest employer is the federal government with over 86,000 employees. The City of Ottawa comes in second with 12,500 employees, and Ottawa Hospital rounds out the top three public employers with 10,000 employees. In the private sector, Nortel (7,000 employees), Canada Post (4,500 employees), and Bell Canada (3,000 employees) are the top three employers. Ottawa is sometimes referred to as “Silicon Valley North” due to the high-tech business located in the city.
